Hello Subscribers!
It’s been about two and a half years since you’ve received an edition of this newsletter. A lot has happened in that time! For example, I started and completed an MFA program. That was neat. There are other things that happened too, but I don’t want to talk about them.
Now that I’ve graduated, I’m re-launching this newsletter. I want a place to write about things I care about— things that may not be capital-I-important in the face of our dumpster-fire world, but things that are fascinating and beautiful and funny.
My long-term goal with this newsletter is to start paid subscriptions. The subscription model is something I’ve struggled to engage with— after all, you are not the Medici, patrons of the arts. You are regular people with your own struggles and budget and artistic desires. However, I hope that you, like me, want more artistic expression in your life that is unfettered (less fettered) by corporate capitalism, and that you, like me, believe that this is labor worth paying for. Of course, bar some miracle of viral proportions, paid subscriptions are a long, long, long way away. In the meantime, if you appreciate this passion project and the hours I’m pouring into it, I would love if you could share this newsletter with anyone you think would enjoy it.
Here’s what will happen with Midnight Snacks moving forward:
On Thursday evenings, for your Friday Eve celebrations, you will receive the Snack Time newsletter, each with a recipe or snack review, capsule pieces on film and culture, and any other little things that I think might brighten your day.
On Tuesdays you will receive a post from one of the following categories:
Late Showing - Movie and television reviews and essays
On the Nightstand - Book reviews, essays, and online reading recommendations
Midnight Musings - Collected essays and thoughts on mental health, lifestyle, and social issues
Bedtime Stories - Short stories and serialized fiction
Rabbit Hole - Deep dives into the most random of topics
You might also get occasional posts styled after good-old-fashioned personal blogs, just for fun. (Note: the Tuesday emails and all bonus posts will be the paywalled content in the distant future.)
There are a lot of things to worry about these days, and a lot of things that warrant your attention. I hope Midnight Snacks can be a bit of a refuge, a bit of a relief, and a reminder that it’s okay to participate in the things that make life worth living, even if they’re not going to help with the _____________* (*impending climate disaster, degradation of democracy and human rights, insert your other concerns here).
I hope you have a great time enjoying midnight snacks with me! I’d love to hear from you if you have any questions/suggestions/concerns/comments. You can contact me at Merritt (dot) Mecham (at) gmail (dot) com, by replying to the newsletter in your email, or via Twitter, @MerrittMecham.
I’ll see you Thursday.
XOXO, Merritt
